ADIEU GODARD (2021)

1h 23min   |   Odia   |  Director: Amartya Bhattacharyya | Producer: Swastik Choudhury

The film revolves around an old man, in an Indian village, who is addicted to pornography and watches them along with his friends. One fine day, he accidentally brings home a DVD having a Godard film in place of a porn film. Though his friends were disgusted, he was attracted by the newness of the film. He then started renting Godard’s films and started gaining interest. Later he calls his friends and decides to organize a film festival on Godard in their village. The idea seemed quite absurd to many, but ultimately the festival happens but has an unexpected ending.

Amartya Bhattacharyya directs a rather ambitious movie..... is truly exquisite as the story is ingenious, filled with humor .... The concept of Godard vs Porn is ingenious and quite entertaining, with the way the French auteur’s films result in the enlightenment of Ananda and the disgust of the locals providing an excellent antithesis, that also comments on cinema and the various ways it is perceived by different people.

This dark comedy drama was filmed in Odisha, India and pays tribute to the acclaimed filmmaker. The movie has a narrative that keeps cutting between the past and the present. ........The story is interesting to follow and Bikash is great in his portrayal of an awkward person who develops a new passion and wishes to share it with others. Madhusmita is convincing in her role as Ananda's intelligent daughter.....

As director, Bhattacharyya creates wonderful establishing shots. There is effective use of slow motion
and Kisaloy Roy makes a good contribution with the music.

This feature is an intriguing achievement. It explores the joys of discovering something new and having a dream to pursue. It also suggests that sometimes not everyone has the same opinion.

The experimental film is an Indo-French co-production and has Choudhury Bikash Das as the central character around whom the plot revolves. Shot exquisitely in Odisha, it’s a socio-cultural comic tribute to the legendary French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard, and draws inspiration from his abruptness and quirky style of cinema.

The title of the film echoes the title of one of the last works of the famous French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard "Farewell to Speech" (Adieu Language) - one of the most difficult films for an unprepared viewer, without the usual plot and actors. Amartya Bhattacharyya's tragicomedy tells about such a clash of the most unprepared viewer with Godard's didactics.

MOSCOW AUDIENCE

The tragicomedy with an intriguing title was shot by Amartya Bhattacharya... Everything here looks fabulously comical and incredible at first, starting from the appearance of the main character.... Such an exotic arthouse can be found in the open spaces of the Moscow International Film Festival.
