KHYANIKAA - The Lost Idea (2017)
89 min | Odia | Director: Amartya Bhattacharyya | Producer: Swastik Choudhury
The film is a fantasy driven tale of two men, a poet and a painter, claiming possession over the same Idea, in a rural village portrayed as a wonderland. Idea is personified as a beautiful young lady, free of all bondage. The two men try to justify their claim over their Idea through their forms of art. Unable to settle the conflict, the two men approach ‘Fate’, personified as a big fat man of authority, to judge their claims. They soon realize that Idea is no one’s possession and it isn’t wise to rely on ‘Fate’ for a judgement. They decide to bury their ‘Fate’, and settle the matter in peace. Idea, portrayed as a free spirit, gets impressed by a kid who resides in an alternate world of fantasy, and decides to venture into the new creative world. The real world, with all its materialistic obsessions, rigid notions and prejudices, loses the Idea forever.

"Luis Bunuel would have been proud of that scene." - while describing the scene where madman tries to catch the rising sun in his fishing net.
Sachin Chatte
If Luis Bunuel or Roy Andersson mean anything to you, then this film will surely be a treat. It is not very often you get to see experimental films of this calibre coming from India and has travelled to festivals around the world.

Watching Khyanikaa-The Lost Idea, a 2017 independent Odia film, is a lot like treasure hunting in the mind palace of its creator Amartya Bhattacharya. Different doors lead to different genres - satire, magic realism, fantasy, romance. All these genres enter and exit seamlessly to the point where it is gratuitous to pin down the movie to one genre..... It is also heartening to see Bikash Das in a role worthy of his acting talent after having seen him in stereotypical roles in mainstream cinema for the longest time....Conceived and executed by Amartya who paints a striking visual on the surreal canvass, the world of Khyanikaa is a refreshing outlier in the crowd of linear narratives, genre conventions and character stereotypes.
Sandeep Padhi

Despite its abstractions, the film is funny throughout and readily comprehensible..... Amartya Bhattacharyya with his mode of cyclical narration weaves a tale of an extended metaphor that is meaningful and convincing.
Amshan Kumar, Filmmaker

This film is beautiful to look at. When a film holds you through just the visual storytelling, that’s an achievement"
